Andrew was a distinguished Sienese solider, who accidentally killed a man whom he had heard blaspheming. Exiled from Siena, he led a life of extraordinary penance and charity until he was allowed to return to his native city. There he founded the Brothers of Mercy, an order that lasted until 1308
