In 1184, William was promoted to episcopal chair of Poitiers after having been a canon regular at Saint-Hilaire-de-la- Celle. He was persecuted for his determined insistence upon maintenance of discipline and championing of ecclesiastical liberty. Many miracles occurred at his tomb, which became a pilgrimage site
