In 386, Saint Martin of Tours consecrated his friend Felix as bishop of the church of Trier , which he governed for twelve years. Owing to the fact that this took place under the usurping emperor Maximus, the legality of his election was questioned by the Holy See and Saint Ambrose. Consequently, he retired to avoid trouble. Contemporary writers, particularly Saint Sulpicius Severus, speak very highly of Felix's virtues, especially his generosity to the poor
